New Bike Shop: Redmons

Well westside peeps, there is a lovely new bike shop that has recently opened up on Venice Blvd. Redmons is a promising little bike boutique. I stopped in and Erica came out to greet me and said it was fine if I took some pictures. While I snapped away she told me about their product lines and was really helpful with answering my questions. No cocky attitude whatsoever. I don't know if everyone who works there is as lovely, but I will think positively and assume they are.

The shop carries Pashley, Gazelle, Public, Linus, and Pake bikes. Only the classic style bikes are in stock but it seems you can order any model made by the companies they carry. They carry nutcase helmets and some nice bags and clothing and bells and jewelry and sunglasses. It kind of felt like being in a RRL. But just bikes. It was really clean and all of the bikes were beautiful. The diversity in the lines they carry give a decent range of prices to suit many budgets. Of course I wish they could carry some of the harder to find bikes or different models of the lines they do have, but this is a more than decent assortment.

They are having an opening party this Saturday with drinks and music. If you are on the west side of town Saturday sounds like an awesome time to check out this shop.

Let's Go Ride A Bike Summer Games are Back

I am pretty excited that the LGRAB summer Games are going on again. There are some pretty great prizes this year. Last year I started out well and then got all lazy and tired from being pregnant, but this year I am not preggers so I have no excuse.
This year the game is a little different. You have to choose 4 out of 10 goals to complete. I haven't decided yet which activities I am going to do yet, but I am definitely doing at least 4.

Other blogs who look like they will be participating this year include Simply Bike, Julie, Cupcake Ride, and 416cyclestyle. Should be awesome to see everyone having tons of summer 2 wheeled fun.

So, last week I got back on the bike. Miss A is 6 months now and mostly able to sit up and has great head control now so I don't have to worry about her as much anymore. I look frumpy, but we were on a mad dash out the door to get Miss S to school. This was Miss A's second time on the bike. Now that I am living on the westside I pretty much have to ride my bike more. Since I have been riding the Townie more now that I have this increasing bump I thought I ought to try and make Miss S's Bobike seat match the bike a little bit better and I added a new white basket and a headlight. I Had a Bike Date Breakfast with The Hubby. I woke up on the wrong side of the bed that day and Miss S. was having a similar problem. By the time we dropped her off at school I was in a foul mood. I didn't really want to go on the date, but The Hubby was insistent. We rode to M Cafe for food:

Holy sexy seersucker, Batman! I know this isn't LA, but it is super chic. I must admit that I love this idea of a seersucker social. The tweed ride is fun, but this is LA and it gets super hot here. It was over 80 at the Tweed II ride. Too hot for Tweed. Seersucker is much more SoCal weather friendly. Also my animal friendly bias is appeased by the lack of wool that need be involved in a Seersucker Social. Finding synthetic Tweed is a huge problem. I end up resorting to vintage that I have had for more years than I have been vegan. Huge Props to the Dandies and Quaintrelles for coming up with such a fab idea and beautiful video. If you are in the DC Area go and take lots of photos! My Lil' sis just moved to DC and I am certainly tempted to use her as an excuse to fly across the country with Miss S and the Pashley.

Cycle Chic Sundays Santa Monica

I was so excited when Eva of Evoluer & Cycle Chic Sundays contacted me about helping to organize a ride through Santa Monica. I have been a bit too tired to plan a social ride all on my own for LA Cycle Chic due to the family situation, and Heather and Caryl have been busy too. This was perfect.

It was a great time cruising through the streets of Santa Monica. I hadn't seen Christa, Caryl and Heather in ages and I was pleased to meet Eva and her friends even though I felt like a bit of an old lady. We made stops at Peets Coffee & Tea and Urth Cafe where I ordered the most delicious vegan chocolate cake in LA. It is so delicious it is evil.

Miss S had a great time and I think I have mastered the new child seat that I used on the Townie. On the previous two attempts I made the mistake of dismounting the bike before she did and it kid of tipped. This time was smooth boarding. Yay, Bobike Jr. seat. I was also pleased that I survived the length of the ride. With my ever increasing figure I get tired sooner than I usually do, but the rides pace was relaxed and I was fine and woke up on Monday feeling fantastic. More Bikes Please!

I am looking forward to Heather and Caryl posting their Photos of the ride here soon. My pics are only average but theirs are beautiful! I have yet to master riding/shooting/child toting.

We happened to be at Flying Pigeon LA to visit the Niholas on the day they sold their BUB. Unfortunately this happened just before the great crash so I did not get to post this before I forgot her name but, she was so friendly and we had a nice chat or at least I did. When I am at FPLA I tend to talk and talk and talk about the joys of dutch bikes and the wonders of chain cases and coat guards and the joy that is a good bell. I may have enjoyed the conversation more than Ms. BUB. So in honor of LGRAB Summer Games I will show you how happy a BUB can make a person.

The First Moms' Ride: Bike to Brunch

We had a great time at brunch at M Cafe. and a very chill ride though Culver City. The turn out was small but it was nice. We were able to enjoy our brunch. Well at least as much as you can enjoy brunch with 4 preschoolers running around your table. I took Miss S on the Townie which I never ride in my neighborhood because of the hills but CC is so flat the super relaxed riding position is great. I took the Bobike Jr. for the first time and it was so weird having her behind me. I am so used to the Bobike Mini and the bakfiets where she rides where I can see her. Also The Hubby(my Macguyver wanna be) stripped a bolt on the seat while moving it over from the Batavus and it wasn't attached quite properly and it came unrigged as we were ending our ride. A was kind enough to haul Miss S the final bit of the trip to the park in her trailer with H. Riding the Townie was also an adventure because it has no fenders or basket or rack or lights or bell(though I borrowed the Pashley's). I felt a bit naked. How is a mom to carry all her mom stuff without a basket or rack? I was excited to hear a couple of "look mommy"s from other kids while we were out and we got lots of smiles from people on the streets and in cars.

The ladies who made it were moms from Miss S's school. A(on the green Townie) is getting to be a regular sight on her bike dropping off H which is awesome to see. V(on the Raleigh) is not a usual bike drop off mom. In fact this was her first time taking her daughters D and C on a bike trip at all. It was their first time in a trailer and they all seemed to have a great time. We got everyone off of the sidewalks and on the street where we can be seen, which was so much easier in CC than it is in Silverlake because the lanes are so much wider. The passing cars were like 6 feet away it was a bit like heaven for me. V was all for planning another outing like this. I am so glad I did this. Hopefully we'll get some more ladies and kiddies to join us.

Since this was Sunday which is officially the day before the LGRAB Summer Games was to begin I figure this is a good start. A social ride and inviting a non cycling friend on a ride. I will not be a cheater though and will try to fit everything in during the allotted time period.

Moms Bike to Brunch This Sunday

The bikes of Coachella 2010

The Coachella music festival is always a fascinating study in style. And some people bring their bikes along for the ride! This year's festival featured a DJ set-up that was entirely people-powered. Bikes, giant hamster wheels, and a seesaw converted movement to electricity to keep the music flowing.

Riding by night, one group had their bikes decorated with star-shaped Christmas lights (which my disposable camera didn't capture very well). Pedicabs also wheeled about the grounds, ferrying tired music-lovers back to the campgrounds. An altogether excellent weekend; it's a shame that I didn't capture more of the lovely bikes & lovely riders!

Good News & Bad News

The good news is I have my computer back. The bad news is Everything on my old hard drive has been lost. That'll teach me to go 6 months without backing up my files. Oh well, I am trying to look at this as a clean slate and an opportunity to start fresh with a lot of things. Since I just got the computer back last night I am trying to everything reinstalled and functional. Hopefully I should be at a place where I can post regularly within the next week. The tweed ride photos are bursting out of my camera, but I am deciding if I should wait until I order an external drive (or 2).

Sadly my beloved Mac seems to be broken. I have all of my photos saved on it and so will be slow posting for the next few weeks probably. Just wanted to let everyone know that I have not disappeared. I'll be back ASAP and will be posting from the Hubby's computer when I can. I do have some photos from the Tweed Ride to edit and share that are not locked in the comatose MacPro.

LA Tweed Ride II

C.I.C.L.E. hosts the Los Angeles Tweed Ride on Saturday, March 27. Dress in your finest duds and mingle alongside some dashing characters in this bicycle ride sure to be annual event.

Meet at Hollywood High at high noon for tea, scones, and an introduction to the ride and contests. This afternoon jaunt will depart shortly before 1pm. Stops on the ride will include some of the best historic and memorable landmarks in Hollywood such as the Egyptian Theater, Cole House and Good Humor Building, which will all make for some spiffy photos.

Post ride hooch for those who are interested will commence at the Cat and Fiddle Pub, made famous by many things, including the film, Casablanca.

You won't want to miss this great ride! As with all Urban Expeditions, this ride is less than 10 miles and friendly towards intermediate level bicycle riders. Bring water, snack and a bicycle in good working order.

A Touch of Summer Nostalgia

In the middle of what looks to be a very rainy winter week, it's nice to remember the summer sunshine. Back in July, Liz and Shay of C.I.C.L.E. hosted an event at Whole Foods-Arroyo about shopping by bicycle. Their talk featured lots of enthusiasm, cute posterboards, and some stylish & sturdy bags & panniers. Sorry for being so slow to blog; it was a great event!

There are many snazzy ways to carry your stuff without sacrificing style or dignity. I'm thinking about putting a large basket on my rear rack, so I can carry delicate things (fresh berries!) without risk of squashing them under the elastic straps.

Raleigh and Robin Hood

While visiting my grandma in Tennessee, I recalled the pair of old bicycles in her garage that my sister and I used to play around on when we were younger. Digging them out from behind the lawnmower, I found an adorable pair of British bikes, a Raleigh and a Robin Hood. After a little dusting off of cobwebs, I took them out for a spin.

I particularly like the copper color of the Raleigh and the dashing Robin Hood figure who serves as that brand's logo. I hope someday these bikes find a new home where they'll get to come out of the garage more often.

Christmas Lights of LADWP

The family went to the LADWP light show which is only open to bikes one night and the rest of the nights are for cars and pedestrians. We went despite the reasons not to. I figure if no one goes to bike night then they can just say we don't have more bike nights because no one comes to the bike night that we do have. I have never been to see the lights before because the line of cars waiting to get through is usually about 1 1/2 hours. I cannot imagine sitting that long in my car to look at lights. I am glad that I went on bike night because I would have been super disappointed after a long wait. However by bike I could ride past the lights over and over there was no exhaust to inhale. We got to smile at other light viewers as we passed. We could stop and take photos and chat with strangers. I would imagine it would be much less fun by car driving once slowly through the fairly lame light display. I have seen peoples provate homes with much more impressive lighting. But again the Holiday spirit was there and I had quite a good time, Even though it was super cold.

A Rainy Day in LA

Yesterday was a rainy day here in LA. It was chilly too. Still cyclists persisted. There were more cyclists on the road than I have here, but not all of my photos came out well. I don't get a lot of practice shooting in the rain. Anyway despite the fact that most people here don't own rain gear there were plenty of people out wearing their normal clothes. Though I did see much more black than I usually do. I guess rain makes them feel a bit more east coast. Didn't see many ladies on bikes in the rain though. In fact I only saw one and she was carrying an umbrella. I was so disappointed that pic was no good. I have a project in mind so that the next rainy day I can come up with an excuse to go somewhere and I will go out, or maybe we should plan a rainy day ladies tweet-up?

Bye, Bye, Biomega

I recently sold my Biomega Amsterdam. It was fun while I had it but it wasn't the right bike for me. It was too modern looking and the light aluminum frame did not give the comfortingly sturdy ride that I get from my Pashley. The Bike will be much happier now that it will be ridden more regularly instead of gathering dust in my living room while it waits for me to choose an outfit that matches it. Anyway it now belongs to Kate and her family who I met at the Get Sum Dim Sum ride. I am glad that I kinda know the bikes new family I am sure I'll get to see it around town from time to time.

I hope they'll be very happy together. I did make a little video of it to remember it by that I'll throw on YouTube soon.

Black Kids on Bikes Freedom Ride

I was really happy to be invited to the Black Kids on Bikes' Freedom Ride last Sunday. I was not able to ride with them but I was able to stop by their meeting location to take some photos. I find that it is a bit of a challenge to find other black people on bikes who are not wearing spandex. I think I've photographed less than five. Though there was one spandex sighting at the ride most of the people were totally dressed in normal clothes. I wish that there were more women on the ride. But it was still more than I usually see. The majority of bikes there were fixie, road, and mountain type bikes. Sadly there were no city bikes there. I think that if I were to ride with them I would have to get the mixte ready to roll (anyone want to meet me at Bicycle Kitchen?). Also as a newbie cyclist who really loathes the idea of perspiration, watching them take off looked super fast and it sounded like they were going really far. They say that it is a ride for everyone and no one will be left behind, but I think I might feel bad for holding them up.

You remember Dre and his violet Bianchi from this photo. He has more than one shirt that coordinates with his bike. Also he has two blue wheels with green spokes now not just the rear.

I think that the idea behind this ride is really great. Not regularly seeing people who look like you doing a thing kinda makes it seem like you shouldn't do it or even can't. It is awesome to see that everyone can use bikes for transportation.
